...publicity surrounding the large debtors has overshadowed the plight of many other less developed countries that are in far worse shape. Says William Rhodes, a senior vice president at New York's Citibank, which has $18.4 billion on loan to Latin America: "Progress in some countries is sometimes balanced by setbacks in others." Bolivia, which has an annual inflation rate of 3000%, stopped making payments on its $3.5 billion debt last May. The Sandinista government in Nicaragua is using at least 40% of its budget to fight its civil war and thus has no way to meet payments...

...generation ago, extreme poverty would not exist today. It is indeed unfortunate that we are led by the wishy-washy, who prefer to address poverty by providing developmental assistance while ignoring the options of birth control and family planning. Frank Scimone Amsterdam Jeffrey Sachs writes movingly on the plight of the poor, but I take issue with his statement that antimalarial bed nets are not available to the poor in Kenya because they cost ?several dollars.? Your excerpt from Jeffrey D. Sachs' book on how to end global poverty [March 14] brought me to tears of outrage and sorrow over the tragic plight of the world's poorest. But I was saddened even more by the stinginess and lack of empathy that the U.S. has continually shown. For all the talk about Christian values, the U.S. has failed dismally to respond to the desperate needs of the poorest of Christ's brethren by being the most tightfisted among the rich donor nations. What an absolute shame! Cheers Echevarria-Leary Albany, California...
