Secretary of State Warren Christopher today set out for Cairo to begin a five-nation drive to get Mideast peace talks back on track. Christopher is flying overnight to Cairo and is slated to continue to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Jordan, plus a Gaza visit with PLO chairman Yasser Arafat. What is Yasser Arafat up to? This morning, the PLO chairman's justice minister said that more than two dozen Palestinians would be tried in special military courts as part of a crackdown on Islamic militants. But the group, which faces the death penalty, is on trial for allegedly collaborating with the PLO's erstwhile peace partner, Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin agreed to allow Palestinians with jobs in Israel to re-enter the country in stages, ending a bitter standoff with the PLO. After meeting with PLO chairman Yasser Arafat, Rabin said he would gradually lift the closure of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and permit 15,000 Palestinian workers to return to their jobs next week.
