...dialogue is the only source of interest. There is hardly a plot: a sick, lonely, old woman struggles along a road to meet her husband at the railroad station; they start off, then stop to wrangle and reminisce. As for characterization, the minor characters are mediocre comic types, and the old couple merely querulous and sad. Waiting for Godot was even more deficient in plot and character, as these terms are usually understood, but the newer work somehow misses the odd, grim delightfulness that exempted Godot from all the usual demands that are made on a play. Catacombs & Souvenirs. A whole college of architects headed by Belgium's Paul Rome was appointed to design the pavilion. On a 153,000-sq. ft. plot just across from the U.S. pavilion, they built a high plaster wall around Civitas Dei. Inside is a slope-roofed church with a capacity for 2,500 standees (only the aged and infirm may sit), a 200-seat chapel and six smaller chapels. Carillon & Congresses. On a plot of only 13,500 sq. ft., the Protestant pavilion consists of a prefab circular church that will hold 200 people and a prefab one-story display building. Wide arcs of the church wall are glass, so that the passing crowd will be able to look in upon the worshipers at the two daily services (four on Sundays). ...might be a plot to get Yalies to go to classes, though we would guess that Smithies at nine will be little more enticing than 'Cliffies at nine and attendance might drop. It might be a subtle move leading to an enforcement of parietal rules, though this may be too great a break with tradition. But the scheme is probably less grandiose than these, and is probably just another aspect of Whitney Griswold's cultural uplift.
