Ignoring Stein's simulacrum of a plot (the lives of 16th century Spanish saints), Wilson treats the opera's Dadaesque musings as a delicate dreamscape, filling the stage with characteristically elliptical images. Better written (and acted) than your average "Women in Prison" movie, the plot is still basically the same: there are a bunch of women locked in a small, dirty space; some of them are lesbians; they are all rude and nasty; they fight with the guards; the guards fight back; the guards get involved with them and/or try to rape them; the warden is evil; through the whole trying experience, someone dies, and the rest of them become better people and closer friends through all of it. Yawn...

...never clear whether that violence is going to be directed against Madame or by one sister against another. Claire, the younger sister, is more resolute in her hatred of Madame, and seems willing to actually carry out the murder they continually plot; Solange wavers between resentment of Madame and fawning subservience. The one chance for the murder to come off seems to be ruined when Madame refuses the poisoned tea Claire offers her; this narrow escape leaves the sisters mired in their own hostility, and in the end it seems that one or the other of them will be forced...
