Director Seagal can't shoot straight either. The choppy pace and inane plot exertions make On Deadly Ground a $40 million vanity epic. At least Warner Bros., Seagal's sponsor, cut the star's climactic lecture on the environment -- antibusiness and boldly pro-plankton -- from a reported 10 minutes to just over three. It's fine to think an audience is stupid but not to leave it in a stupor...
More importantly, she can act. Given the task of carrying this film, she does it with the light grace that the story calls for. Although the only real momentum the thin plot ever generates surrounds Angie's pregnancy and the birth of her child, the film's restrained exploration of the complexities of the characters and relationships more than make up for this lack. Angie can be simultaneously selfish, callous, sarcastic and affectionate. Even when Angie's actions are reprehensible. Davis infuses her character with so much spirit that she remains engaging. With the exception of the fairly predictable revelations leading up to the murder of Becky's husband, the novel ignores plot development in order to concentrate on an internal examination of the lives of these women. He sings about history and culture, and dying, and love, and open wounds. "Take...
...role of Odette/Odile. Her charisma tended to overshadow her sultry, though less exciting partner Patrick Armand in his role of Prince Sigfried. The pure lines of their pas de deux and the chemistry between Ponomarenko and Armand was complemented well by the spectacle of the events which surrounded their plot. The ensemble scenes of merrymaking on the castle lawn in Act I and in the castle ballroom in Act III sustain an interest independent of the central pair; they prove that both the quality and spirit of the dance extend to the whole cast. Of particular note was Daniel Meja...
