...Lopez and Clooney infuse these cardboard cutouts, this flighty girl and this incidental robber, with so much life that their instant attraction seems not only believable but inevitable is nearly miraculous. Stop and think about the plot an hour after the movie and it doesn't seem too impressive, but you'll never question it as the film is rolling. The chemistry between the two is astonishing. Each is perfectly capable of controlling a scene alone as well, thank you very much. Lesser-known Lopez is incredibly appealing--she might play a lousy employee, but she plays a great human...
...barrel of laughs, working for the Feds is better than taking out a personal ad, and, quick, inconvenient jail terms aside, only the really bad guys get punished. It's not fair for something this ideal, this utopian, this completely far-fetched to be so darn good. The illogical plot is utterly captivating from beginning to end, and the performances are superb. Out of Sight is really, well, out of sight...
However, two alterations to the additional cartoon's plot become evident at this point and add some interesting angles to the hackneyed production. Rather than starting out as full-fledged living clocks and feather-dusters, the castle characters reveal that they are slowly turning into houseware, which adds a nice touch of humanity to the painfully splashy musical. Also, through conversations and (ahem) read-aloud sessions, Belle's love for the Beast develops because they both feel isolated and rejected in their respective homes. This is a particularly refreshing change, since the "beauty" in the story is usually depicted...
...canon. For the RSC's new version of Cymbeline, the Bard's little-performed romance, artistic director Adrian Noble has lopped off nearly a third of the play and seasoned it with Japanese costumes and mannerisms. If the production doesn't quite soar, it's probably because the plot remains one of Shakespeare's messiest, with everything from a headless corpse to a guest appearance by the god Jupiter. Matthew Warchus' sleek, modern-dress version of Hamlet toys with the play as well, dropping entire characters (no Fortinbras), tossing in home movies of Hamlet and his father, and setting...
...sounds like a plot from the Simpsons: The conservative town council of Republic near Springfield, Mo., and a local witch are in court over a Christian fish symbol adorning the town seal. Jean Webb, a local practitioner of the pagan Wicca faith wants it removed. Wicca, a faith based in pre-Christian European beliefs, upholds the sacredness of nature and includes the practice of witchcraft. The town is fighting the lawsuit; Webb alleges local citizens have had her fired from her job at the local newspaper and are subjecting her family to harassment. Removing the fish would leave the Republic...
