...movie has enough plot for three good movies, or at least three better ones than this. There are two tragic mother-son pairs, two suicides, a grotty autopsy, a car crash and much spectral infiltration of supporting characters. (They stick their ghostly heart through your rib cage, then squeeze). I found the movie wearying and stayed only because Mary C., who had to leave after the first hour, wanted to know how it came out. The short answer: boy gets girl, ghosts run wild. And that wasn't worth waiting for. But if you've always wanted...

...sinister, scary, evil plot," Lt. Paul Vernon of the Los Angeles Police Department told TIME.com. "We're continuing our investigation and looking at other possible targets." Vernon notes that because Rutterschmidt allegedly met her first victim in a Hungarian church, the LAPD is putting out feelers to the local Hungarian community for further leads. "The first and second incident were six years apart, so it's hard to believe there haven't been other victims." Both women are being held at the Federal Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, Vernon says, and investigators have impounded Golay's new Mercedes...

...soon become targets of the Inquisition. Alatriste too comes under suspicion, and the blood, pure and otherwise, begins to flow. Like the other Alatriste books, Purity of Blood bristles with adventure and swordplay, but in this one the tone is darker, more political. Real-life figures stir the plot, including the poet Francisco de Quevedo and the Conde de Olivares, the powerful Philip IV Minister painted by Velázquez. The Inquisition, in all its appalling horror, is brought to life, as is Spain's wrenching decline. Laments Iñigo, Alatriste's young sidekick, who tells the story...

...plot--about the pursuit of a Harvard professor (Tom Hanks) and a French policewoman (Audrey Tautou) by a devout, albino hit man (Paul Bettany) and rival gangs of learned loonies, all in search of Christ's Holy Grail--has some superficial bustle, but essentially it's a course in speculative religious and art history. Somebody talks, the others listen. Those lectures give most of the actors little to do. Ian McKellen, as a crotchety charmer, fares best, because he does most of the talking. Bettany, finding poignancy in murder and masochism, comes in second...

...Volver, which means "return," is an apt title for a movie that marks a return both to Pedro's early, realistic melodramas and to the plot of All About My Mother. In both movies, an important male character dies violently in the first 20 mins.; the story then traces the lead female character's reliance on other women to get through difficult times, even as she helps them. There are differences, of course. The earlier film defined motherhood as nurturing life; the new one adds to that the mission of angelic vengeance, in which women determine that the sexual sins...
