...Closing Door," contains little humor, and what there is could easily be done away with. The dialogue doesn't seem very important, but serves the purposes of the plot well enough. The plot, by the way, concerns an unemployed man who has lost faith in himself and is hovering on the brink of insanity. His loving and loyal wife is trying to get him into an asylum for treatment when the play begins. The entire play covers only the next few hours...
...some curious reason, the director started the story with the death of Bosinney and used a flashback to recount the central action of the picture. For those who had not read the book, this must have taken much of the punch out of the plot. If this wasn't enough to do so, then the astonishingly dull seript was. Some of the lines were so trite, that I felt the way an English A teacher must when his pupils read their early themes...

The photography is subtle and brilliant, a fresh realistic idiom for the moviegoer lulled by the stylized American technique, that, together with masterful directing, (by Carol Reed, director of Odd Man Out), and superb acting, raise a weaker plot to excellent drama...
