...Baum at first hedged, but later said Jackson would not submit to the test, at least not until after her sentencing in October. "The test will not change the fact that Autumn was raised to believe he was the father," Baum said. Jackson supporters attacked the Cosby TV ploy as grandstanding, pointing out that he had refused their earlier requests to take a paternity test. Some skeptics were suspicious because Cosby's blood sampling was done by surprise and in secret rather than in a controlled setting along with Autumn, in keeping with the usual practice in paternity cases...
Yogi? Casper? Flat Top? Scooby Doo? The naming of these rocks and formations [SPACE, July 21] seems shrewd as a public relations ploy, but flies in the face of naming heavenly bodies after illustrious figures of myth, science and literature. Will the first earthly Mars walker who greets these familiar objects on site at Ares Vallis be likely to record for posterity the query "Dr. Boo-Boo, I presume"? Is this a failure of our educational system? Did the ingenious individuals who are involved in this project not avail themselves of the liberal-arts curriculums at their distinguished universities...

Leonard Horn, CEO of the Miss America Organization, explains that the decision "is about choice, individuality and allowing 17- to 24-year-old women to be who they really are," and is not, we repeat, not a ploy to boost ratings. The organization, concerned that the image of the beauty queen is a wee bit outdated, is giving the competition a make-over. Accordingly, the national office distributed to local organizers the following list of word substitutions to make during this year's pageant season...
...says the spokeswoman. "Brad told me it wasn't over any one thing." What split the Pitts became the week's favorite guessing game, with answers ranging from new co-stars (Pitt is currently in New York City making Meet Joe Black) to suggestions that it's all a ploy designed to distract the press from what would have been the year's most ogled nuptials. Pitt already faced one unwelcome torrent of attention this month when it was revealed that Heinrich Harrer, the character he plays in Seven Years in Tibet, who is meant to be a good...
