Connerly's life, a Horatio Alger tale of an orphan's adversity, pluck and triumph, has an almost mythical value to his supporters. He was born in Louisiana, where his parents divorced when he was two (he hasn't seen his father since) and his mother died when he was four, leaving him in the care of her sister and brother-in-law Bertha and James Louis. At six, he moved with them to Bremerton, Wash.--a journey made difficult by segregation laws that shut them out of hotels, rest rooms and diners--and later to Sacramento, where Connerly...
...worse, that ship is packed with standard-issue fools, whose function is to react badly to all the movie's fires, floods and explosions. In this melee it's hard to develop characters we can get behind. Sandra Bullock, of course, is back as Annie, but the combination of pluck and vulnerability that made her so winsome in the Ur-Speed is missing here. This time she exists mainly to get tied up and abducted by Willem Dafoe, an actor who can never quite transcend (or enjoy) his inherent weirdness the way Dennis Hopper does. Like most people, he probably regretted Gillman's decision to end the song with a drum roll...
...much did they have to pay to get it, what did they get in return--it turns out that the most valuable scrap of information to have is a nine-digit number. That number is a ZIP code, one that tells the White House post office to pluck that letter from the 15,000 addressed to Bill Clinton every day and slip it directly under the President's door. The people who know the code are Clinton's oldest friends and earliest allies. Few of them followed him to Washington, and maybe that is why they are the people...
