McDonald's, the world's largest fast-food chain, said that by the end of 2004 it would stop using meat from animals that had been excessively treated with antibiotics. The decision may help curtail the practice of dosing healthy animals with antibiotics to plump them up for slaughter. Found in the umbilical cord, some bacteria and the red combs of roosters, hyaluronan reduces inflammation in arthritic knees and prevents scar tissue after surgery. It's also what makes up the gel Restylane, a Medicis product recently approved by the FDA to plump wrinkles around the nose and mouth.
