Caracas, 300 miles to the east, consumes the oil money with gaudy flamboyance. At night, searchlights turn the circular Hotel Humboldt to a tower of golden glow at the end of its cable car, 4,000 feet above the city on Mount Avila. Inside the red-plush walls of La Belle Epoque restaurant, the oil lawyers and the air-conditioner distributors hoist $2.40 martinis and down $20 dinners. Visiting businessmen snap on black ties and pad down the corridors of the jammed Hotel Tamanaco, bound for nightclubs where sleek performers dance the traditional, twirling, fast-stepping joropo to the sound...

Saratoga (adapted from Edna Ferber's novel Saratoga Trunk; music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer) is a gorgeously decked-out period musical, moving from a plush New Orleans in the '80s to a palmy Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The handsome sets and costumes by Cecil Beaton are much the brightest part of the show. The two cargo planes are assigned a leapfrogging schedule that will keep one of them always one stop ahead of the President. Eight specially trained...

...regarded as a ringing plea for woman's emancipation, she was superb as the child-wife who is treated as a mindless, soulless plaything by a priggish husband (Christopher Plummer). But while Actress Harris-kittenish, hectically gay and finally rebellious-could break out of Nora's plush Victorian prison, she could not wholly shake off the stilted language and obtrusive 19th century stagecraft which Adaptor James Costigan took over from Ibsen...

...inner-circle businessmen who gathered at St. Louis' plush Racquet Club grumbled bitterly about Symington's "sellout" to labor, and to this day some of them remain convinced that his romance with U.E.W. was a bit of cynical expediency, however well it may have worked for Emerson Electric. The accusation overlooks Symington's authentic streak of respect for labor, which stems from his grimy days as a chipper and moulder in his uncle's foundry. Over the years, Symington has won the warm respect and esteem of the Electrical Workers' high-voltage President James Carey...
