...February Illustrated, however does not fulfill the promise which it pledges in its remarkable cover. We turn to a poem by C. H. Jacobs '16, the author of the mooted "Gott Mit Uns." "The Chant of Love" is hardly worth the prominence it receives, and it is to be regretted that the Illustrated makes such an unsuccessful departure from its usual program, venturing into the realm of poetry for no other reason--apparently--than to beat the newspapers representing the sequel to "Gott Mit Uns." ...poetry in the number is interestingly contrasted. When we say that Mr. Thacher Nelson's "Evening Prayer" suggests irresistibly the odor of the steam pipes in an Anglican church, we are not attacking it as a poem. 'The one selected,' he wrote, 'is rather the best; and has the great advantage that it would puzzle the devil to tell what it means.' Nearly hidden at the end of this volume, is the poem, in its author's handwriting, which Longfellow wrote upon the death of Hawthorne...
...white flash of genius. Mr. Fay's "By Olympus," not-withstanding the "hymadryads" (this issue is defaced by misprints on almost every page), is another little master-piece of delicate comedy. A Bacchus that smiles in his sleeve is surely a god we may all worship. A pleasing prose-poem and Mr. Wright's severe indictment of Chesterton are the most worth-reading of the other prose-contributions...
