Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. rescued the U.S.S. Constitution from the wreckers in 1830, when he wrote the memorable poem "Old Ironsides," which begins, "Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!" After a national outpouring of emotion, Congress quickly appropriated funds for the restoration of the frigate. It is still docked in Boston Harbor, a symbol of America's longtime affinity for tall ships and deep water. Poetry may have been enough to save a ship from the scrap heap then, but in an age more closely attuned to the demands of economics the sight of the Stars and Stripes fluttering...
Side two of Abbey Road is a long poem by, I'm sure, John Lennon, and performed under his guidance. (In fact, this whole album is very much John's trip, just as the last double-album was Paul's and George's.) This whole song-poem is done in the style of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" with short sections of lyrics and themes disappearing and re-appearing to build to the definite expression of a particular message and its corresponding mood...

...Lerner's poem is more abstract, impressionistic, a disjointed account of an apocalyptic evening in a bar in New York, which "has been Idle Wild/since you've been gone...." The poet tries to get to, tries to explain "a world that's really wordless" but everything is fractured...
