...body to be interred there. Thomson might almost have called it "One Sinner in Three Acts," because he dwells almost exclusively on the rakish side of Byron's character-his playboy excesses, his foppish haughtiness, his promiscuous escapades with both sexes. The listener must take Byron's poetic and personal genius on faith...
Directing a cast of serious, capable actors, Coe can allow herself plenty of zany liberties with their creative abilities. "The props include an adding machine and roller skates," she says, "and Moliere's poetic interludes that divide the three acts are set to Golden Oldies. Moliere is one of the most traditional of the French comic dramatists, but by escaping the mannerisms of the day and by capitalizing on his comic strength, impeccable dramatic construction, his remarkable sense of character, we have given ourselves the freedom to enjoy Moliere to its fullest...
...emergence as a strong individual performer. For years, his excellent musical talents in writing and performing were submerged in the successful group efforts of Peter, Paul, and Mary. Economics, politics, poetic expression, the history of ideas, sociology and so on intersect when simply describing aspects of this experience. I associate myself with the view that Afro-American Studies is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry, not an academic discipline. Before a student is able fully to concentrate in the subject, a thorough grounding in an established discipline should be required. From the student's point of view, only then will he or she be prepared to pursue professional...
