...never, in all these years, made an effort to meet you ... I think I have avoided you out of a kind of fear of finding my own double [Doppelgänger Furcht] . . . When I read one of your beautiful works I seem to encounter again and again, behind the poetic fiction, the very presumptions, interests and conclusions so well known to me from my own thoughts . . . Your ability to be deeply moved by the truths of the unconscious, the recurrence of your thoughts to the polarity of love and death-all of this had for me an uncanny familiarity . . . Forgive...
...presented, Murrey Hargrove's The Martyrdom of Roy Wilson suffers from a lack of discipline and craftsmanship which is only redeemed by talented direction, acting, and technics. If not original in concept, it is at least original in its attempt to force normal speech patterns and language into a poetic form. The script occasionally rises to real eloquence, but more often it is tawdry and indulges in the most egregious bad taste. Mr. Hargrove's use of profanity is completely gratuitous, like a small boy swearing before his parents to see how they will react...
Born into the Irish poetic tradition, she showed an unerring and instinctive insight into her multi-faceted material--be it mystical, earthy, whimsical, comic or nature-loving. The drama takes place in the Old Southwest--an informal trial is set up to bring truth to light in what turns out to be a sensitive, almost unearthly love of brother for sister. Their rapturous relationship was doomed; the sister has been killed by the cruder man whom she married but to whom she had never given herself. At the trial of truth, the boy, his Conquistador parents, and the husband declare themselves before...
Corot did not have a single buyer for his work until he was middleaged. But then he was caught up by a wave of buying enthusiasm for the poetic reveries he had begun to paint. He grew increasingly rich in money, but poorer in the quality of his work. During his later years, however, in such paintings as Young Girls of Sparta (opposite) he achieved a new quality in figure painting. By treating his female models as he had his landscapes ("I paint a woman's breast just as I would an ordinary milk can"), he worked from atmosphere...
