Despite the familiar material utilized, the book is interesting and its story is coherently told. The plot centers on the attempts of the gallant and worldly-wise (and, as usual, much in debt) Captain Poildeau to find "The Beautiful Unknown," and gives in the running of its course opportunities for various characterizations in both serious and comedy fields.
