Huff's monologues come alive in a way most conventional plays don't. In recounting the horrific, but hardly implausible, series of events that push their friendship to the breaking point, the two cops narrate much of the action; occasionally comment indirectly on each other's recollections; sometimes re-create actual scenes together. Cumulatively, the effect is to drain the sometimes shocking events of any melodrama, to force us to see them with the same resigned, matter-of-fact detachment these characters do. The taut, 90-minute script builds with a tragic inevitability, yet with a coda of redemption that...
...Witless Bay Ecological Reserve About 40 minutes south of St. John's, the small fishing community of Bay Bulls is the departure point for puffin-and whale-watching cruises through this reserve. It's home to a half-million-strong Atlantic-puffin colony that is North America's largest. A 90-minute catamaran trip with marine-tour operator Gatherall's, www.gatheralls.com, will whisk you out to Gull Island, which teems with birdlife during the April to August breeding season. From July, humpback whales begin to arrive: keep your eyes peeled...
...Loft This homely, unpretentious and very affordable eatery, www.theoldloft.com, is housed in a restored "net loft" - a building used by fishermen to store goods and repair their nets. Tucked away in Woody Point, one of the sleepy coastal communities within Gros Morne National Park, it's a place to scoff your way through some of the tastiest seafood in the province - from capelin to cod chowder, buttery mussels, scallops and more. While you wait for your meal to arrive, you can mosey around the downstairs craft shop and stock up on quality souvenirs...
...These days, most countries, including many democracies, hold triumphal marches, boasting military hardware and commemorating past sacrifices. But, as Orwell noted many years ago, "beyond a certain point, military display is only possible in countries where the common people dare not laugh at the army." In Beijing, tensions have run high and security has been tight in the run-up to Oct. 1. The government places great stock in the value of this sort of national spectacle, and the public has been barred access to streets where the parade takes place. While the events are meant to herald China...
That's true. And no doubt the issues of any perceived political incorrectness - and potential racial reverberations - are trickier to handle when the offender is the leader of a NATO ally. But Berlusconi's prominence is the point, and as the first black leader of the most powerful nation on earth, Obama is seen as a model by many countries struggling to integrate people of different races and religions. (See pictures of Barack Obama's family tree...
