...listing all of Weiland's thefts and influences is a task both lengthy and pointless--he even rips off himself. "Where's the Man" reeks of his much earlier "Interstate Love Song," not that this is necessarily a bad thing. STP was a great radio band, and a simple, heart-felt blues ballad sounds as good today as it did three years ago. The next track, "Divider," runs along the same listenable tracks--a piano-driven, modern-rock testament to the pain of drug addiction...
...Delightful as these activities may be, they are still useful, productive, or at the very least, "rewarding." They are not the same as, say, playing card games. Or going window-shopping. Or re-reading old mail. Or going for a walk--not jogging, not power-walking, but just a pointless walk. Or talking with friends in the dining hall for an extra two hours. Or reading Cosmopolitan. While the rest of America has been off getting college credit for studying Silver Spoons, the star, one of the executive producers of the situation...
Partly, it's Clinton's fault. With the elimination of the deficit (although not the huge debt), it seems pointless to continue to whine about Reagan's irresponsibility. In fact, as Jonathan Chait points out in the New Republic (Feb. 2), many conservative revisionists are now so emboldened by this fortuitous occurrence that they've taken to arguing the absurd. Ignoring the immediate, post-Reagan recession in the early '90s and the effectiveness of Clinton's policies since then, they claim that it is the healthy economy borne by Reagan that has restored our fiscal health and allowed the budget...
