...other extreme were the boring "Ennui Comes, Off We Go" and the pointless "Put Some Rhythm in Your Method." In the latter, Ducey's Shelby, who strikes us as a poor imitation of "Woody" on Cheers, does a soulless soft-shoe routine to win Heidi's heart. And although Safari Sagoodi contains mercifully little gratuitous sexism compared to recent Pudding shows, the "Heidi's Chronicle" number--in which the dumb secretary laments that she can't find a man--strikes us as questionable...
Still, for all its wit, the text (by John Weidman, Sondheim's collaborator on Pacific Overtures) has no obvious topical resonances -- and probably could not, given that the authors view assassination as arising from thwarted ambition rather than any ideology or cause. As satire, Assassins is pointless: it attacks people who have no defenders. As pop sociology, it makes points about fame, envy and media culture that were made far more richly in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves. One is left wondering -- not least because of an imagined conversation between a would-be assassin and composer Leonard...

Under Keith Kessler's skillful direction, the production managed to rise above its pointless set and regrettably synthesized orchestra. As Frank's two wives, Jennifer Giering and Cori Lynn Peterson, were respectively endearing and evil. Although Beth Turner as Frank's best friend, did not sing as well as the other two, she provided some of the best acting of the evening. And Tim Krochak (Frank) performed equally as well as a 40-year old cynic and a naive college...
