This week the British War Office announced that a combined force of British, Canadians and Free Norwegians had invaded the Norwegian archipelago of Spitsbergen, "without enemy interference." Spitsbergen, 750 miles from the North Pole, has a little coal*, which the British decided to keep out of Nazi hands. The expedition, which was under Canadian command, gave restless Canadians their first warlike mission in over a year.
