Except for the tedium, however, the crews are not suffering. The barge companies supply all meals, and the fare is fine. The men on the Ann Blessey polish off inch-thick steaks several times a week. Lunch one day last week on the Hawkeye consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, tamale pie, green beans, pineapple upside-down cake and fresh bread. "The cook's probably working harder than anybody," says Dennis Drury, captain of the Cooperative Vanguard...
Born in Shanghai, China, Tribe is the son of Polish Jews who fled both Soviet and Nazi persecution. The family emigrated to San Francisco when he was five. A gifted child, he completed high school at 16 and majored in mathematics at Harvard College. After graduating summa cum laude, he began a Ph.D. program in math, specializing in the rarefied subject of algebraic topology. Midway through the doctoral program, he decided that mathematics would be too "lonely" a pursuit and enrolled in Harvard Law School. He finished magna cum laude in 1966, and a year later was selected...

And last week in Paris, Seiji Ozawa presided over the world premiere of Olivier Messiaen's first opera, Saint François d'Assise, which is clearly intended...
OTHER THAN THE superb costuming, the show's production lacks polish. Despite some clever staging, the crew is fairly creative, but ultimately not able to overcome the limitations of the Currier Fishbowl to create the make-believe world musicals require. The choreography is well-conceived, but occasionally stumbles on the hesitancy of the cast...
