...Stands: The Life and Convictions of Spiro T. Agnew, records that as a boy in Baltimore, he used to help his Greek-born father prepare talks before local groups. "While the Governor's best subject was English," writes Author Ann Pinchot. "this is how he learned to perfect and polish the eloquence and clarity for which he is now known." Alas, it is precisely his prose style that frightens off so many, including some who are sympathetic to his basic message. Columnist William F. Craig Newenhuyse plays the role quite well. Although he is hampered by some bad acting techniques (an awkward physical presence), he effectively conveys the role's pessimism. He is particularly fine in the first act, where Vidal has lent him a great deal of wit and polish. He was sensitively aware of the character's dynamics, never boring, but not altogether inspiring...
...vote, and has had difficulty expanding that base. Many prominent Democrats are actively supporting Lindsay. When the plane landed at Tegel Airport in the French sector of West Berlin, they handed over passports and guns (which turned out to be unloaded) and announced...
Though Burns seems in many respects to be a typical New England Yankee, he was born in Eastern Galicia, then a region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but now part of the Ukraine. An earnest scholar, he was able to translate the Talmud into Polish and German by the time he was six. His family emigrated to the U.S. when he was nine and settled at Bayonne, N.J., where his father became a paperhanger, a trade that Burns learned as a schoolboy...
