...evident confusion in recent Soviet policymaking (TIME, May 5) got a pat explanation by the Polish Communists, who professed to see a power struggle between Politburocrat Mikhail Suslov, identified as an old-fashioned Stalinist ideologist, and that beaming old pragmatist, Nikita Khrushchev. The New York Times, playing the Polish thesis hard, even reported-but without offering supporting evidence-that Mao Tse-tung had sided against Khrushchev. But highest-level foreign policymakers in Washington, after weighing all the available but fragmentary reports, have now come to the conclusion that what is going on is not a struggle between individuals fighting...
...meticulously drawn portrait shows Lady Dalkeith robed in pink, with matching nail polish, even has slivers of tin foil glittering among her painted diamonds. The academicians think that it illustrates their goal of acting "as a steadying influence on the haste or extravagancy of innovators"-i.e., the pattern-conscious "kitchen sink" school of art. Lord Attlee found Merton's painting "awfully jolly," but art critics disdained it as mere "craftsmanship." Flooded with commissions, Merton rejoined: "I only paint beautiful women, children and angels...
Caldwell, for all his disclaimers of polish, is smooth. He is also contained. "Symbolism--I've heard that word." "Henry James--I remember hearing his name or reading it in school." "What Southern mythology?" At "The University" (of Virginia) he didn't pay much attention to the requirements, but was in graduate courses in English, economics, and sociology by his junior year. He never graduated...
...Yugoslavia's Marshal Tito, Khrushchev last week drove Yugoslavia to a public challenge of Soviet primacy in Eastern Europe (see below). In the process, Khrushchev also ineptly stirred up the ticklish relations between Russia and Poland. Fortnight ago. in deference to the knowledge that the U.S.S.R. could bring Polish industry to a standstill in six weeks by cutting off raw-materials shipments, Poland's Wladyslaw Gomulka took steps that were bound to increase his unpopularity at home. In response to pressure from Khrushchev. Gomulka curtailed the power of the democratic Workers' Councils, and severely limited the freedom...
Presumably somebody told Khrushchev he had said the wrong thing. Last week, as he held forth at a Polish embassy reception in Moscow, his eye lit on Israel's Ambassador Joseph Avidar. Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians had asked Marshal Voroshilov about Soviet mistreatment of Jews, Khrushchev said, during her recent visit to Moscow's Tchaikovsky festival. Voroshilov denied the charge by saying, "In fact my wife is Jewish." Khrushchev added: "Half the members of the Presidium have Jewish wives." Those who keep track of such matters in the West doubt that even two Presidium members have Jewish...
