Despite the conference's size, the group was surprisingly close knit and insular. It was somehow satisfying to walk into the cocktail party that initiated the conference and see Harold Cruse, the black writer, deep in conversation with Jan Kott, the Polish professor of Comparative Literature. Still, it was at the same time disconcerting to see how many of the new arrivals greeeted each other as old friends.
