This year the omens were bad even before the race began. Driver Art Pollard was killed on May 12 during the elimination trials. On race day, a threatening sky did not reduce the throng that turned out to see wonders like Linda Vaughn, a busty blonde in gold lame, parade on behalf of a transmission manufacturer. The racing cars were billboards on wheels, plastered with ads for everything from beer to motor homes...
Since Michael J. Pollard (most familiar for his slow-witted C.W. Moss in Bonnie and Clyde) holds down the title role, this movie is, alas, a Pollard vehicle. In fact, Pollard is physically right for the part, although with his bulbous cheeks and cretinous eyes, he looks a bit like Dopey. However, he acts more like all the Seven Dwarfs-simultaneously. He comes on with a long cape looking a bit like Michael J. Pollard impersonating Batman, and gradually sheds down to a star-patterned T shirt, slacks and a Porky Pig button that lights up. Then, kicking away the piano bench, he goes into an old-fashioned rock-'n'-roll finale and plays standing up, kneeling down, even handstanding on the keyboard with feet high...
