...lives, while 2 million have died in a half-century of civil war between Sudan's north and south. Those numbers may have persuaded the international community to subordinate democracy to the cause of peace, but a slew of opposition groups withdrew from the presidential election ahead of the poll - citing repression and the expectation of vote-rigging - leaving no serious challengers to the incumbent, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir. In the upside-down world of Sudanese politics, it was the party that fought hardest for democracy that pulled the plug on the country's moment of "democratic transformation...
This past year the National Book Award celebrated its 60th anniversary by conducting a public poll to select the best work of fiction that had won the award. To make the short list for this poll, the National Book Foundation balloted a number of select writers to pick their three favorite winners. Interestingly, four out the six books chosen were short story collections—the collected stories of William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, and John Cheever respectively. From the day McCain plucked her from obscurity, Gore has seen her as a potent, raw political talent who should not be underestimated. He didn't mention Palin by name in his remarks at the Reid event, but he did condemn Republicans...
...first hit, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The movie benefited from one of those titles that virtually demands that a couple see it, as when Valentine's Day was released on Valentine's Day weekend. And though Date Night gleaned only a modest B rating from CinemaScore's exit poll, it could get a Sunday bump from Fey's stint over the weekend as guest host on Saturday Night Live - the coolest form of cross-promotion, especially when SNL's musical guest was teen fave Justin Bieber. Now every girl from 8 to 14 knows about Fey's movie...
