...defining personality to achieve cohesion, Kline glories in the character's variety. Spontaneity and impulse are key to his approach. Exploring the role in rehearsal, Kline improvised without warning, flopping onto the floor when he was meant to sit, tearing pages from a book and pasting them onto Polonius' head with spit. Between scenes he would pounce on a piano or indulge what friends josh as chronic hypochondria by relaxing his back in a vibrating armchair, transported from his book-lined apartment in an Upper West Side brownstone. Kline and the orderly, meticulous director Liviu Ciulei clashed so often that...

...talk with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for long enough to make an impression. Yet all of the actors give the sense that there are unspoken depths to their characters—a crucial skill, considering that their characters have far more space to themselves in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Polonius (Tim M. Marrinan ’06) is suitably obsequious, Ophelia (Andrea M. Spillmann ’07) is weepy when weepiness is called for, and a moody Hamlet (Jeremy R. You will find out during a furtive, furious love scene lighted by licks of fire. Of course, the pace of Kunuk's epic is less Vin Diesel fueled than dogsled deliberate. Which is only to say that Atanarjuat is not like every other film this summer...

...characteristic self-berating monologue, Hawke scrutinizes James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, asking, "What would he do?"-something which nicely crystallizes Hamlet's vacillation. Hamlet screaming at Gertrude to "Leave wringing of your hands" as she dives for a telephone, and placing a recording wire on Ophelia so Polonius can eavesdrop on her conversation with Hamlet are all commendable directorial choices, but the work becomes spoiled with major misinterpretation. As the play was origianlly written, Hamlet chooses not to kill Claudius in act III, scene iii, because he discovers Claudius praying and repenting in the chapel...
