Last week the A.M.A. moved on its own to plug the leak. It hired a private security firm and gave lie detector tests to at least four employees. But even as the polygraph tests were being administered, Sore Throat was passing along to TIME copies of memoranda showing how the A.M.A.'s Washington lobbyists requested funds for politicians from AMPAC, the organization's political action committee. He also explained how the money made its way circuitously from Chicago to the coffers of those Congressmen whose favor the A.M.A., which cannot legally make direct political contributions, is interested...
...palace guard of deputies stopped the inquiry to avoid embarrassing the bureau and its boss. The agent was simply allowed to resign. The KGB also appears to have penetrated the FBI in 1961. In this case, the agent suspected of giving FBI reports to the Soviets (a polygraph test on him was inconclusive) was fired on a minor technicality...
...Japan, Ken Hashimoto, another polygraph expert, discovered that his cactus could count and add up to 20. George De La Warr, a British engineer, insisted that young plants grew better if their "mother" were kept alive. Ironically, the authors did not address themselves to some significant facts about botany. Plants do respond physiologically to certain sound waves. Talking to a plant may indeed make it healthier, because it thrives on the carbon dioxide exhaled by the speaker...
TIME has learned that yet another piece of evidence against the Vice President has been turned up. Following the visit to Baltimore of the Justice Department's chief criminal prosecutor, Henry E. The witness is Jerome Wolff, president of Greiner Environmental Systems Inc. and a former high Agnew aide. He has agreed to testify, in return for limited immunity from prosecution himself, that Agnew has extorted bribes from state and federal contractors. The polygraph showed that Wolff told the truth about personally delivering...
...accused Rizzo of trying to bribe him in his choice of a Democratic candidate for district attorney. The mayor lied on six of the ten questions, said the lie detector, while Camiel told the truth on all. After the test, Rizzo proclaimed his innocence, reaffirmed his confidence in the polygraph-then demanded a re-evaluation of the results by his own experts. Flattery, it seemed, got Rizzo nowhere with the machine...
