This was no affair for the likes of political dissidents or even government department teaching fellows. Deans Jackson and Graham Allison contended the demonstrators threatened the dignity of the opening ceremonies. The demonstrators may have disrupted the gratuitous pomp and circumstance, but how can political expression interfere with the teaching of responsive public service...

Meanwhile, the often crude and threatening efforts of Kennedy School administrators to deter the protestors from having their say -- including their insistence that the demonstrators violated an "agreement" that never existed -- reflects a frame of mind that values the forms of pomp and ceremony over the substance of debate about meaningful issues. The selection of a new Pope who shuns the pomp and formality of ancient tradition, and instead addresses the pressing social and religious issues of the day, would be the best way to fulfill the bright promise of John Paul's reign...
