Those Harvard graduates who have tasted both systems like Yale's better. They have explained their preference in high and pompous terms: that it "indicates a greater amount of trust in students by the administration", that "honesty is bred through temptation"; and other canards. But what they really mean to say was summed up by one student, who, stumbling our of an examination room and collapsing into a chair, remarks...
...Sperry reads his lines like a Sunday orator. But what Gilbert thought of as sentiment is now considered silly, and the overdone speeches fully contribute to the show. Stephen Bolster as the Duke and Jacqueline Crowell as his wife are a bit weak on their singing, but are sufficiently pompous in the role of aristocracy. The Duchess and her daughter, Merle Moses, flip their fans in fine precision, although a little too often. Miss Moses was nervous in the opening act last night, but is otherwise adequate. Her secret attraction is the drumboy, Bob Stern, who sings with a strong...
Once a year in Guatemala, everything that is revered, respectable, powerful or pompous gets powerful but highly irreverent ribbing. The occasion is the traditional Eastertide Strike of students at the University of San Carlos, one of the most merciless lampoons anywhere. Starting weeks ahead, the students shamelessly shake down politicos and merchants for expenses, adding to the fund receipts from a scurrilous vaudeville show and a scandal sheet that flouts all libel laws. With the $25,000 to $30,000 they collect, the students build big floats that are, in effect, moving stages for the outrageous and often obscene skits...
...single-panel cartoon showed a snub-nosed child stopping by his teacher's desk as he put on his coat to go home. Asked he: "Did I learn anything in school today, Miss Watts? Mom always asks." Or it may be a young secretary standing up to her pompous, jowly boss: "I hate reminding you about that raise, Mr. Doaks, but my husband keeps nagging me about it." Some fans believe Clark is at his best on the domestic scene, e.g., an adolescent daughter, about to leave on a date with her boy friend, puts the bite...
...mixture of farce and melodrama, the play is full of sweetness and vinegar. But not until the third act did O'Casey's anticlerical lines provoke the gallery into boos, hisses and shouts. When a pompous canon told some of the characters: "The Church is ashamed of you, the bishop is ashamed of you, and I am ashamed of you," somebody bellowed from the gallery, "And we are ashamed of you!" Protests also rose when O'Casey's unorthodox priest (a sympathetic character) urged a girl to seek release from her "foolish vows" of chastity...
