Roger Cunningham danced the Nutcracker on opening night, and his style and storytelling gestures were well suited to the role. In the beautifully staged snow scene, Larissa Ponamarenko was absolute perfection as the Snow Queen: the slenderness of her arms and legs captured the delicate, precise angles of a snowflake in midair, while her flawless technique and feather-light jumps evoked the quality of snow melting as it hits the ground. Victor Plotnikov, as the Snow King, was a worthy partner, strong both technically and artistically, while the choreography of the snowflakes created the impression of swirling, wind-blown snow...
...curtain opens on the sisters Tatiana and Olga in the garden of their estate, the light and airy pastels of the scenery form an ideal backdrop for the light-hearted dancing and the lovely innocence of young Tatiana (Larissa Ponamarenko), who is absorbed in a book. With the arrival of Olga's lover, Lensky, the young couple dance with neighborhood friends. Lensky is accompanied by his friend Onegin (Laszlo Berdo), a handsome Russian nobleman clad in black, with whom Tatiana immediately falls in love. That evening Tatiana composes a love letter to Onegin, and falls asleep only to dream...
...from Onegin. He comes to see her, and once again they are swept up into a passionate pas de deux: clearly, Tatiana's feelings for Onegin were never completely crushed. The tortured feelings of love and despair are captured both by the climaxing score and by Cranko's choreography. Ponamarenko and Berdo complements the technical perfection of their steps with an intensity of emotion that draws the audience to a breaking point as Tatiana pulls Onegin across the stage only to fall on his chest. In the end, however, her loyalty to her husband prevails, and in a sad twist...
