While he was working full time as an electrical engineer for IBM in Huntsville, Ala., Evans used his spare time to start what is now regarded as a landmark program in college recruiting. Often seeking tips in bars, pool halls and churches, Evans combed Huntsville's black community in pursuit of talented, but in some cases non-college bound, high school students.
