Thursday, August 19 If the tentatively scheduled Gemini-Titan 5 space shot goes as planned, it will be covered by a three-network pool (a TV first) during the 8½-day flight. Plans for live pool coverage of the recovery, however, have been postponed until...
Some swap offers sound too good to be true. A resident of Turtle Cove, Jamaica, is willing to turn over his four-bedroom house with private beach, swimming pool set in a natural garden, car, dinghy and sailboat, plus the services of a butler, cook, maid and gardener. He wants in exchange a big-city apartment. And he will settle for any one of six cities-New York, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Geneva. But he is choosy. After thumbing through dozens of offers, he still has not found one sumptuous enough to suit him. Time is running short...
...Pool. Obviously, to fulfill its new commitment, the U.S. must increase the size of its armed forces, which numbered 2,653,861 on July 1. Pentagon spokesmen said that this number will be increased by some 330,000 within the next year. They hoped that all this could be accounted for by the boost in the monthly draft call-which has, in fact, already gone from a mere 3,000 last February, to 17,000 for September. For the present, the National Selective Service plans to continue drawing upon only unmarried men between the ages...
...lifesaving amount of a missing clot-promoting protein. But all too often, new blood or plasma cannot be pumped into a "bleeder" in sufficient quantity without risk of overloading his circulatory system. Some concentrates of the vital protein are available, but they are expensive. Now Stanford Physiologist Judith Graham Pool has developed a simple, cheap and effective method of concentrating the protein in so potent a form that small amounts can stop hemorrhages...
...Pool learned that frozen plasma, when slowly thawed, leaves behind a residue rich in antihemophilic globulin (AHG), the protein that is lacking in the blood of hemophiliacs. Spun in a centrifuge, the protein can be concentrated further. Refrozen, it can be stored for relatively long periods in sterile plastic bags. Thus far the AHG concentrate, which is being prepared by a pair of San Francisco-area blood banks, has been used successfully on 14 patients in four California hospitals. Researchers may some day learn how to help hemophiliacs make their own AHG, perhaps through transplants of AHG-producing tissue...
