Bates was in the box for Harvard, and succeeded in pitching a very poor game for the first four innings. Four bases on balls, a couple of wild pitches, and six clean hits is a poor record for any game, even with professionals. On the other hand he struck out five of their stronger batters, and even Kelly himself. The rest of the team had their share in the poor playing, and made some inexcusable errors.
