...Growing frustrations with the military come as Bangladesh is reeling from a colossal crisis in food security. The price of rice has soared 60-80%, a rise that spells hunger for millions. "This is not even a question of choice for the poor," says the AL's Razzaq. It's a global problem, but Moeen knows all too well that in this case, as he says, "bread is as important as freedom." The caretaker government has frantically tried to address the crisis, draining waterlogged lands for cultivation and growing alternate crops like potatoes in between harvests. But little...

...understanding and accommodating those who naturally want to make a "better life," even if doing so means breaking the law [June 16]. But a nation must decide what policy best serves the long-term interests of all concerned. We are currently swamping the labor markets of the working poor, minorities, the unskilled and legal immigrants with millions of illegal workers who want to make a better life. Violence returned to Burundi after a ceasefire deal failed, so WFP must postpone plans to stop feeding Burundian refugees in Tanzania. WFP is sometimes a target of violence too. WATERLOGGED FIELDS Because of heavy spring rains, many Midwest cornfields are too soggy for planting, and some seedlings that have sprouted are drowning, driving corn futures to record highs. The Department of Agriculture said 14% of the crop in Illinois and Indiana, above, was in poor or very poor condition as of June 8. Nationwide, 1 in 10 corn plants had not yet emerged from the ground, indicating a worrisome late harvest for a crop that can wither easily in the summer heat. Overall, U.S. food prices are expected to rise 5% this year...
