...Gmail. In 2008, 58 percent of Harvard undergraduates used Gmail as their primary email client, up from 38 percent the year before. It’s no surprise that so many students are jumping ship to get on board the Google bandwagon. Webmail is plagued with problems, notably its poor interface, lack of adequate spam filters, limited user names, and miniscule storage capacity of 40 megabytes. FAS Information Technology claims to be working to respond to these student concerns, but change has been slow in coming. While various improvements have supposedly been considered, concrete plans for reform...
...disaster in Burma presents the world with perhaps its most serious humanitarian crisis since the 2004 Asian tsunami. By most reliable estimates, close to 100,000 people are dead. Delays in delivering relief to the victims, the inaccessibility of the stricken areas and the poor state of Burma's infrastructure and health systems mean that number is sure to rise. With as many as 1 million people still at risk, it is conceivable that the death toll will, within days, approach that of the entire number of civilians killed in the genocide in Darfur...
Some Kwagyi children have begun to develop fevers. There has been a spike in cases of stomach ailments and diarrhea, when before the cyclone there had been none to speak of. These are the ominous first signs that disease is stalking the villagers, whose poor diet makes them weak and vulnerable. They have no medicines until we give them what we are carrying: a few paracetamol and some water purification tablets. The villagers smiled and waved in gratitude when we left. It is the only aid they have received...

It's less a novel about Los Angeles than it is Los Angeles--in-novel-form, an attempt to embrace and describe and sum up the city by mixing fictional story lines about diverse characters--rich, poor, homeless; black, white, Mexican--with actual facts (somebody might want to check them) about L.A.'s freeways and crime rates and history and such. It's reminiscent of one of Tom Wolfe's billion-footed beasts, but it's even more reminiscent of the socially conscious early 20th century naturalism...
Cleaning up after a catastrophe is hard work anywhere. But few places are more vulnerable than Burma, also known as Myanmar, an isolated, desperately poor nation of 53 million. Diseases that fester in the wake of such natural disasters could prove as deadly as the storm. Most galling, a 450,000-strong military that had ruthlessly gunned down dozens of monk-led demonstrators last September was seen as doing little to address the country's worst weather calamity in living memory. Faced with such monumental devastation, the junta has said it would welcome foreign help. On May 6, President George...
