Doctor Zhivago has sold more hardcover editions in the United States than any other book since Peyton Place. It was the most popular literary Christmas present of the 1958 holiday season. The proportion of pages read to books bought must be more lopsided than that of the Gideon Bible. Society's troubles with amphetamine go back almost 20 years to a time when the most popular inhaler contained Benzedrine (Smith, Kline, & French Laboratories' trade name for one form of amphetamine). Prison wardens complained that accordion-pleated paper fillers loaded with 250 mg. of amphetamine (15 times the average daily dose a doctor would prescribe for reducing or lethargic patients) were being smuggled to convicts, who chewed them and went on violent rampages. ...paternal tones Kassem urged members of the Iraqi Students Union to stop wasting time on political activities (riots, etc.) and get back to their textbooks. Less paternally, he issued tough new orders to the Popular Resistance Force, the Red-infiltrated militia whose members have been careering through Baghdad making political "arrests." Henceforth, said Kassem, the P.R.F. would function only as a reserve force "under direct military orders," and any of its members who tried to interfere with "the freedom of citizens" would be subject to "the severest punishment." Explaining why his new orders were necessary, Kassem was warily unspecific...

...executioner's rifle cracked across Cuba last week, and around the world voices hopefully cheering for a new democracy fell still. The men who had just won a popular revolution for old ideals-for democracy, justice and honest government-themselves picked up the arrogant tools of dictatorship. As its public urged them on, the Cuban rebel army shot more than 200 men, summarily convicted in drumhead courts, as torturers and mass murderers for the fallen Batista dictatorship. The constitution, a humanitarian document forbidding capital punishment, was overridden...
