...Each candidate's proposal reflects the overall thrust of his or her campaign: John Edwards, who was first to release an economic-stimulus plan, has the most populist approach, focusing on such measures as assistance to unemployed workers and weatherizing homes. Hillary Clinton unveiled a detailed proposal shortly after her New Hampshire primary victory that showed off her economic expertise by putting more emphasis on the mortgage-lending crisis. And Barack Obama's solution was the most broad-based of the three, relying heavily on tax cuts and rebates to try to jump-start the economy...

...Republican abandoning the usual G.O.P. talking points has been Huckabee, who has sounded a more populist tone. "One thing a presidential candidate ought to be doing is acknowledging the 800-lb. gorilla that's in the room with us," he says. "It's astonishing to me when I hear the people in our party just act as if the economy is doing superb, and there's no issue to worry about. In an interview afterward, Beasley argued that Huckabee could be an unstoppable force, marrying his populist momentum from Iowa with an Establishment tie to the state as a fellow Southern Governor. "McCain will get a small bump," Beasley said of the Arizona Senator's New Hampshire win. But, he predicted, it would not be enough. In 2000 Beasley backed another Southern Governor, George W. Bush, in a triumph over McCain. Eight years later, Beasley foresees...

...extent, Edwards is running on a Jerry Brown model to win the nomination. The former California governor gave Hillary's husband, Bill Clinton, a scare in 1992 before a gaffe forced Brown to bow out. Like Edwards, Brown was largely ignored by the media until his grassroots campaign and populist message caught on in late March. Edwards is a much stronger and more credible candidate than Brown, who ran as a quirky outsider, but there are a lot of similarities in their messages: Brown ran on a platform of campaign finance reform, pledging to end the "Stop-and Shop...
