Lerwick is the largest port town in Mainland (the misleading name for the largest island) and the heart of the Shetlands. When someone from the outer isles speaks of those who have moved to Lerwick, it could be the lament of someone from the Ozarks who has lost a loved one to the mean streets of Manhattan. But Lerwick (pop. 7,280) is an Old World village, with a bustling harbor and historic stone monuments. The main drag, Commercial Street, set back from the esplanade and guarded from the wind, is a winding, echoing cobblestone path lined with appealing shops...
...Nicobar Islands has meant that until recently many of them were off-limits to foreign visitors. These days?though perhaps not for much longer?it's possible to stay on a deserted island in the Andamans without booking a bungalow through a luxury resort chain. We left for Port Blair, the capital, intending to spend a week on Smith Island. But by the time we made it up to Diglipur,?a 200-km cross-island excursion involving trucks, buses and boats?to catch the ferry, we found that Smith was one of the five put on the market, and therefore...
...Delhi has big plans for the Andamans. The Islands Development Authority is talking about introducing fast catamarans, hovercraft and helicopter services to link the islands. The airstrip at Port Blair will be upgraded to enable bigger jets to come in from New Delhi, Bangkok and Singapore. It all sounds like progress, but we're glad we got there before the development. Visitors to the sumptuous resort soon to be built on Smith Island will no doubt be able to dine on steak and fries and have American breakfasts served in their seaside bungalows, but they will probably miss...
...Perhaps because they are so remote, the reefs are relatively unvisited; divers are more likely to meet a manta ray than another human. Almost all the scuba shops are based in Port Blair, and while there are a number of interesting dive sites in the vicinity, the capital is hardly the most scenic part of the islands. A better option is the Andaman Scuba Club (and amanscubaclub.com ) on Havelock Island?a 4-hr. ferry ride north of Port Blair. This operation, run by a pair of Swiss enthusiasts, is still adding to its regular sites as divers explore the neighboring...
Euro Disney isn't alone in seeing the European theme-park market as under-developed. This summer, Vivendi will open a new water park and two hotels alongside its Universal Studios Port Aventura park near Barcelona, making it the first competitor on a Disneyesque scale. At least three other large regional parks will launch in 2002. Bear, Stearns' Abramson sees the competition as a positive for Disney because it familiarizes Europeans with American-style theme parks. "Parks here have historically been some small amusement with a juggler and music playing somewhere," he says...
