...ritual of Haitian politics, what was happening was a dechoukage, a "rooting out" of Duvalierists. The military and civilian mutinies appear to have been provoked by the barbarism of an attack on worshipers at a Port- au-Prince church, St. Jean Bosco, three Sundays ago. The attack, which left 13 dead and 77 injured, was staged by the Tonton Macoutes, the vicious thugs who terrorized Haiti under the Duvaliers. Under Lieut. ...jeeps that arrived at army headquarters in Port-au-Prince last week were greeted by incredulous stares. Seated handcuffed and rigid inside were more than 30 commanders who had been ousted by junior officers in barracks revolts around the country. Throughout the evening, sporadic gunfire could be heard in various parts of the capital, as rival army factions fired warning shots at one another. For now at least, Avril seems to have persuaded the various factions to accept his leadership...

...most shocking incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 11: a band of thugs rushed into Port-au-Prince's St. Jean Bosco Church, where the Rev. Jean- Bertrand Aristide, a staunch opponent of the government, was preaching a message of revolutionary faith and defiance. Wielding machetes, revolvers and long, sharpened metal skewers known as fwen, the attackers struck at anyone in their path. As members of the congregation scrambled through doors and windows, several parishioners hustled Aristide out a side door and into an adjacent school. But eleven people were killed in the melee, and more than 80 wounded. Among...
