Canton, for over 1,000 years the great port of South China, lies on the delta of the Pearl River, in the centre of a broad rice-growing valley. A municipal paradox, the city's wide, clean boulevards lined with modern apartments and shops run parallel with filthy, unpaved alleys, so narrow that three people cannot walk abreast, lined with squalid one-story hovels. Fully one-third of the city's 1,000,000 Chinese live on dirty, water-logged sampans, jam-packed along the river fronts...
...Francisco Franco's Army of Moors, Italians and Spaniards on the eastern front. Converging from a concave line in three directions, columns of Rightist troops pierced beyond the heavy fortifications of Albocacer, surrounded Lucena del Cid, were within easy gunshot at week's end of the ruined port of Castellon de la Plana (Big Castle of the Plain). In the north was reported the slow retreat toward France of the Leftist "Lost Division"of 10,000 militiamen, 3,000 peasants, trapped for eleven weeks in the high Pyrenees...
Attacks on British ships in the 23-month-old war were brought to 60 and the 78th British seaman was killed. The British-owned port at Gandia, with Union Jacks painted on the rooftops, was bombed and machine-gunned in what British Manager Edwin Apfel called a "deliberate brazen attack on British property." At Denia, a raisin exporting centre, the French merchantman Brisbane was bombed, five seamen were killed, a British observer for the Non-intervention Committee killed and the captain injured. Farther down the coast at Alicante the British freighter St. Winifred and the 5,387-ton ship English...
Lightly ballasted, she wallowed tipsily in taxi tests, thrice dipped a wing in the water, twice had to be towed in. One glowering afternoon last week, her port mooring-ring snapped and the wind-tossed ship could not be held to her mooring. As far as Veteran P.A.A. Test Pilot Edmund Allen could see, there was only one thing to do. Starting his motors, he ordered the stern line off, and the Clipper started across the bay. She thundered for the open Sound off Duwamish Head, cleared the water once, settled back, rose anew, spindrift spuming from her hull step...
Spying for the army that has blockaded the port of Castelmare, Miss Carroll changes sides after getting a good look at the city's undernourished urchins and oldsters. This serves to emphasize the picture's incontrovertible thesis-that civilian populations suffer in modern war-but since her sweetheart (Henry Fonda) is in the army fighting to defend Castelmare, audiences are not likely to be bowled over by Miss Carroll's change of sentiment. Otherwise, Blockade's main innovation lies in the fact that it concentrates not on the fighting in the front lines...
