...most Ozu films, "Tokyo Story" is about the increasing contrasts between old and new Japan. And like all Ozu films, the plot is so plain, despite its variety of psychological and emotional levels, that it can be summarized as an anecdote. An old couple leave their home in the port-town of Shimonoseki to visit their children in Tokyo. But there they are intruders in spite of a fond reception: there is no place for them in their children's homes, and they are sent away to vacation at some hot springs resort. There, the boisterous carryings-on of young...

...effort to prevent that, Fradier hopes to excavate 1,000 acres of ruins. The Punic port at nearby Salambo (from which the Carthaginian navy controlled the Mediterranean) would be returned to its historical appearance and would double as a yacht basin. In Carthage itself, a Roman theater would be refurbished to serve for modern dramas. Statuary would be restored, as would the baths of Antoninus...

Race officials also were caught by surprise. Many were relaxing at a cocktail party in a Newport mansion when Lelouch radioed back his discovery. Gin-and-tonics were hurriedly abandoned and the officials scurried to the Port O' Call Marina for an unscheduled welcoming ceremony. After Colas docked, Newport Mayor Humphrey ("Harp") Donnelly III popped a bottle of New York champagne and proposed a toast. Colas politely drank the offering, then ducked into Pen Duick's cabin to produce a magnum of Taittinger. Obviously, nearly three weeks at sea had not affected the Frenchman's palate...

...increasing use of sealed metal containers the size of 20-ft. truck trailers stops it. In the past two years, at least 26-and perhaps many more-huge containers have been stolen. Large stretches of the waterfront are poorly policed because jurisdiction is splintered among the bi-state Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Waterfront Commission and a host of other agencies. Much of the work falls to private police hired by the pier owners, but many owners are afraid of reprisals from dock workers if they crack down on pilferage. Importers, exporters and wholesalers often fail...

More than a few shippers have packed up and left the troubled port. Last fall, United Fruit shifted its banana loading to Albany, 124 miles up the Hudson River. Company officials expect that distribution costs will be lower out of Albany, even though the new location adds eleven hours of travel time. Some Midwestern shippers are abandoning U.S. docks entirely in favor of ports at Saint John, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Canadian laws permit railroads and shipping companies to offer combined freight rates at substantial discounts; such discounts are prohibited in the U.S. Even such distinctively U.S. products...
