...various bands wind through the streets of Port-of-Spain, the masqueraders pass in front of stages to be judged. It becomes easy to forget that anything other than Carnival ever took place here. Trinis are a very proud lot and both they and Brazilians claim to have the largest Carnival. At this point, I'm not one to gauge the nationalistic claims. Let's save that for the rest of the week, when I'm nursing my aching legs...

...Wednesday in Trinidad and Tobago, the 100,000 people who have taken to the streets make it a point to forget quite a few things. First among these is a sense of self-control, exchanging it for alcohol-infused abandon as they trek around the capital city of Port-of-Spain; second and most noticeably, they forget much of their clothing. But this is Carnival, and for Trinidadians the entire social year revolves around this event - which also attracts tens of thousands of foreigners, like myself, who themselves become Trini, if only for a short time...
