...photograph of earth ever taken from deep space, and it was shot by Lunar Orbiter 1 from a point only 27 miles above the surface of the moon. Clearly visible in the foreground was part of the lunar surface marked by its familiar craters. But most of the visible portion of the earth was covered by swirling white clouds that obscured the outlines of the terrestrial continents...
...fain would die now," Mein Schifflein lief in wilden Meer by Johann Schein, and the two-part madrigal Altri canti di Marte by Claudio Monteverdi. They were sung under the direction of Mr. Schmidt by the Chamber Chorus. The Chamber Chorus, which is made up of a small portion of the Summer School Chorus, produces an over-all sound which, while generally excellent, sometimes becomes a bit too rich and developed to permit the listener to savor the true flavor of this type of music. ...highest altitude ever reached by man-well above the 354-mile record set by Russian Cosmonauts Aleksei Leonov and Pavel Belyayev during the 1965 flight of Voskhod II. In its lofty elliptical orbit, Gemini-Agena passed several times through the "South Atlantic Anomaly," an area where the lower portion of the Van Allen radiation belt dips to within a few hundred miles of the earth. Though the astronauts were exposed to radiation, it was only one-twentieth the strength that NASA scientists had expected and well within safe limits...
