...crucial for the TV image. When Dukakis faced rowdy antiabortion demonstrators in suburban Chicago last week, he tried to settle them with lawyer-like reasonableness ("I respect your right to disagree . . .") but looked sweaty and abashed on the screen. Bush's reaction to boos from shipyard workers in Portland, Ore., was similar, except for the forced-folksy dropped g's ("You're exercisin' your right; I'm exercisin' mine"). Bush's performance, however, depended on the particular network vantage point. On CBS his counterattack sounded namby-pamby; on ABC, with longer clips of his remarks, he came across more...
...libbed to the American Legion convention that Sept. 7 (and not Dec. 7) was the 47th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The news last Tuesday night featured both candidates fending off hecklers: militant right-to-lifers who shouted Dukakis down in suburban Chicago and outspoken hardhats who jeered Bush in Portland, Ore. There was little evidence that either group was representative of the electorate. The city passed an ordinance last fall making "aggressive begging" punishable by as much as 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. Minneapolis lawmakers followed suit in February, ruling that no person shall "grab, follow, or engage in conduct which reasonably tends to arouse alarm or anger in others." Portland has also passed...

Boston's Ritz-Carlton offers Rockport walking shoes, Spalding baseball equipment and Canadian Royal skates. The rival Four Seasons Hotel in Boston hands out Reebok shoes. At the RiverPlace Alexis Hotel in Portland, Ore., guests can don Nike jogging suits and shoes. The sporting-goods company, based in nearby Beaverton, is negotiating with three leading hotel chains that are interested in offering Nike products nationwide...
...Coast. In many that washed ashore, the snouts, flippers and tails were pocked with blisters and craters; in others, huge patches of skin had sloughed off. In the Gulf of Maine, harbor seals currently have the highest pesticide level of any U.S. mammals, on land or in water. From Portland to Morehead City, N.C., fishermen have been hauling up lobsters and crabs with gaping holes in their shells and fish with rotted fins and ulcerous lesions. Last year's oyster haul in Chesapeake Bay was the worst ever; the crop was decimated by dermo, a fungal disease, and the baffling...
