...much-needed comic relief. William Fitchtner and Rick Gonzalez, playing two of Starks’ fellow salesmen, brighten their scenes by lightening the mood with dry humor, lampooning the mundane life of a traveling salesman. Starks’s interactions with the two, particularly in bars, create a vivid portrait of his life before the fortune-teller. But limited by the mediocre script and plot, their significant contributions cannot rescue the film. Technically, “First Snow” boasts some shining moments but never achieves originality. Cinematography by Eric Alan Edwards lends an eerie and surreal sense...

...traveling companion, Mak cuts a charming figure. But his portrait of the last century is almost unremittingly dark. The mayor's scythe sweeps through the book as Mak tours Verdun, Guernica, Auschwitz, Stalingrad, Dresden, Chernobyl, Sarajevo. With an itinerary like that, there are predictably few joyful moments to be had. The book is filled instead with a sort of dreadful comedy that drove Samuel Beckett and others to see Europe as a theater of the absurd: the jaunty optimism of soldiers setting off to World War I (home by Christmas!), the apocalyptic hope of the survivors...

...children eventually get adopted. The same situation applies to the rest of the country's orphanages. In fact, in the group picture of Tam Binh orphans that circulated shortly after the adoption took place, the boy who is now Pax Thien Jolie was the only child in the portrait who was eligible for adoption, according to Trung. "None of the others in the photo are slated for adoption...

...well not to fall over an Australian. Storr has chosen to show Rosemary Laing's panoramic photos of the Woomera Immigration Reception and Processing Centre, a new Mad Max?inspired motorcycle video by Sydney's Shaun Gladwell and, perhaps most intriguingly, Melbourne conceptualist Christian Capurro's Another Misspent Portrait of Etienne de Silhouette, for which over 260 people hand erased each page of a 1986 copy of Vogue Hommes. Representing Australia, the pavilion will house New Zealand-born Daniel von Sturmer's quirky table-top kinetic sculptures; the elegantly epic ecological videos of Sydney's Susan Norrie will grace...

...another simplistic character, a quintessential good guy lacking not only flaws, but also any other traits that might have caught this reviewer’s interest. Director Phillip Haas convincingly evokes the paranoid atmosphere in Iraq, with its confusing web of alliances and grotesque ironies. Particularly successful is the portrait of the Green Zone, even if it is driven home rather more emphatically than necessary: Anna and Dan lounge by the pool at a luxurious club as mortar attacks continue outside, and they make love to the sound of gunfire. At the same time, the film portrays U.S. soldiers with...
