From the rear of the large square entrance hall rises the main stairway opposite the doors on the first floor. The first flight leads to the Widener Memorial Hall, back of which, on the same level, is the room containing Widener's collection of books and his portrait above the mantel. On the first floor at the top of the outer steps and to the left are the offices of Mr. Lane, the librarian, and to the east of those are the "order room" where books received are checked with the order lists, and back of these two sets...
...Paulding's specialty is the sketch. In the "Man on Stilts" he draws a good little portrait. He cannot be too much encouraged in perfecting this form of composition which is so unpopular but so artistic. Mr. Hillyer's "The Dawn of the Sunset" is an allegorical sketch of doubtful significance, but well phrased in its extreme brevity...
...Fogg Art Museum has received, as an anonymous loan, an important painting by Sir Henry Raeburn, the greatest of Scotch painters. The picture is a portrait of Mrs. Henry Veitch, a great grand-daughter of Annie Laurie. It was painted in 1807 or 1808, and represents the artist at his best. It is not certain how long this masterpiece will remain at the museum, but it probably will not be removed until next Wednesday. There is a possibility, however, that it may be necessary to return the picture to its owner early tomorrow...
