...Internally, the North will portray Clinton's visit as a great victory. It will probably say the former President's trip showed that the Dear Leader brought Washington to its knees to beg for the release of the two journalists. In fact, it shows that the diplomatic reset button is about to be hit - yet again - in Pyongyang and in Washington. Clinton almost certainly bore a message that Washington wants to talk again, in some forum. And while the U.S. might not want to "buy the same horse" now, who knows what it might be in the diplomatic market...
Part of your book talks about the depiction of mad scientists in Hollywood films. Do you think film and television producers can realistically portray scientists considering they have to sometimes use stereotypes or exaggeration to get people to watch what they produce? I don't think that we can demand incredibly high levels of fidelity to what scientists actually do. What I think we can shoot for is positive role-model figures who are scientists. What really leaves audiences with a positive outlook on the scientific world is if the smart character is actually heroic for being smart...
...announcement on July 3, Palin sought to portray her resignation in much the same way: a selfless act that should earn her kudos for saving taxpayers' money. "No one person, judge or nominee will speak in a female or people-of-color voice," Sotomayor said in her "wise Latina woman" speech, citing Justice...
Many people on both the right and the left like to portray environmentalism as sacrifice - denying oneself some kind of pleasure (a heated pool, extra space in an SUV, the convenience of dry cleaning) in order to help save the planet. Conservatives do so partly because they believe pursuing self-interest in the form of material pleasures is necessary for the proper functioning of markets. Liberals do so because they believe rampant materialism can distort the proper functioning of democracies (and because "Yes We Can" T shirts don't need dry cleaning anyway). But what if environmentalism didn't really...
