This week in Tientsin, in Portsmouth, N. H., in Cavite and Shanghai, at Alaska, Guantanamo Bay, there will be parades, radio speeches and assorted red fire. Thus the Marine Corps will celebrate its 165th birthday. Since it was founded, the Marine Corps has had only 17 commandants; the head man of the birthday celebration will be William Ward Burrows' 15th successor: crop-headed, broad-chinned Major General Thomas Holcomb, spectacled veteran of more than 40 years' service. Burrows' command was only a few hundred men, armed with muzzle-loading muskets...
...Midlands textile centre. So did Derby, where Rolls-Royce engines are made for Britain's Spitfire and Hurricane fighters. Other motor and aircraft factories at Birmingham and Coventry, attacked before, were attacked again & again. While the Germans hammered these targets, they continued pounding at seaports: Cardiff, Bristol, Portsmouth, Harwich, Dungeness, Hull. Only British stubbornness prevented the evacuation last week of such smashed-up places as Ramsgate, Dover, Southampton (see col. j). In the headlines appeared damage to such sentimental landmarks as St. Giles, Crip-plegate, in London where Oliver Cromwell was married and John Milton buried. Milton...
With him went his military and naval aides. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, omnipresent Harry Hopkins. Overnight by train they went to Portsmouth. N. H. At the Navy's great base across the river at Kittery, Me. the President saw three new submarines on the ways, two more keels laid down, more men (6,000) at work than were there during World War I. Awaiting the party was the President's yacht Potomac. At Nahant, Mass, they paused for the President's first look at his newest (tenth) grandchild, two-month-old Haven Roosevelt (who declined...
Dead slow though this schedule seemed to anxious landlubbers, it looked like fair speed to those who knew the tough realities. New construction already clogged the ways at most of the Navy's own yards (Brooklyn, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Boston, Mare Island, Charleston, Philadelphia, Puget Sound). Few and busy were the private yards geared to produce warships (Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Bethlehem Steel, Bath Iron Works, Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., New York Shipbuilding Corp., Electric Boat Co.). Also at or near capacity were the only three private producers of naval armor plate (Bethlehem, U. S. Steel, Baldwin...
...expected from the Germans failed to occur. Instead of trying to knock out the Royal Air Force before attempting anything else, Germany had another plan: blow out the lifelines. Raiding squadrons of bombers, sometimes 80 and 100 strong, escorted by fighters, had already struck time & again at Devonport, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Brighton, Newhaven, Dover, especially hard at the bustling docks of the Thames Estuary. Shipping in the English Channel-embattled Britain's turbulent moat only 22 miles wide at its narrowest (Dover-Calais)-had been incessantly attacked by German aircraft and motor torpedo boats based just across the water...
